I took delivery of my first single stack firearm on Monday, the Walther PPS. I had a chance to take it out to the range today and put a couple hundred rounds through it. It felt great and didn’t have a single hiccup. I was very impressed with how controllable the recoil was. Highly recommended.

What size round does it fire? How large is the magazine?

I have a ppk/s and it's actually pretty heavy. Would prefer something lighter for carrying around.

It comes in 9 and .40 but mine is a 9. The magazine in the picture holds 7 rounds, but it also comes with an extended magazine that holds 8 and you can purchase a flush magazine that holds 6.

This is my first Walther, but I'm already a huge fan. I'd love to shoot a PPK/s

Nice. So is this like the modern update to the PPK?
Looks like they’re not legal in Canada, according to forum posts. Oh well.

Basically, yes. I wonder why it is not legal...Does Canada have a magazine disconnect/loaded chamber indicator law?

Nope. Size laws. The barrel is 81 mm in size, whereas in Canada handguns are required to have at least 105 mm long.
Not sure about that second part, but I don’t think so.

Very interesting. I've never heard of any type of short barrel-pistol laws.

Yup. The PPS looks like it was designed for concealed-carry, which is pretty much illegal in Canada. It is possible, but it’s a very strict process.

Nice! I like the Spyderco too. I’ve got a PPK that I can’t hit jack with. Your’s looks like a much better shooter.

Thanks! I did alright with it today. It’s the first striker fired handgun I’ve shot, so that will take some getting used to. I did fine underneath 7 yards, but anything past that was a bit of a struggle.

Great to hear. (I have a Spiderco Native in my pocket right now, too... nice knives.)
This is on my very short list of next guns... but I need a bunch more discretionary money first.
Then I need to decide whether I want a better home defense gun, either a pistol-caliber carbine or a KSG 12ga. shotgun... or a single stack carry gun in .40S&W, and PPS is the front-runner for that.
Everybody always recommends the Smith&Wesson M&P Shield as a single-stack .40, but I think I prefer the PPS. The PPS is longer in the barrel and the grip, but thinner. The M&P Shield looks like all the other M&Ps and kind of like a Glock... as in they look like a block. I realize aesthetics is a VERY low priority compared to safety of operation, reliability, durability, and what accuracy can be afforded... but PPS does all that, fits my big hands better with the extended mag, and looks better doing it.
I also want to try the Remington Model R51 subcompact, but after a botched introduction with production CNC tolerance issues, being pulled off the market for nearly a year while re-tooling and moving their factory, it hasn’t really gained traction or inventory in the market after it’s re-introduction. Supposedly its Pederson action is interesting, and the barrel axis is quite low, and good for minimal recoil and muzzle rise.
But if it fails to gain traction, I am not sure if a .40S&W version will be introduced, and I would like to share ammo stocks with my full-size double-stack .40. (and another reason why I kind of want a .40S&W carbine, also... like a Beretta CX4 Storm or something)
.40S&W PPS is probably what I would go to, though.

I'm not a fan of the looks of the Shield either. I think the PPS is a sexy little gun. After all of the teething issues with the R51, I would probably steer clear if I were you.

I really want a P99, but it is off the CA legal list which means I’d have to buy it private party and here in CA they are going for 2x the national average. So I just recently bought a Berretta 92FS which I can pickup between tomorrow and January 7th.

Allow me to sing the praises of the Springfield XD-S. I’ve got one in .45 and they are available in 9mm. Small enough to be comfortable in an IWB holster but still packs a punch. Plus it is easy to shoot and doesn't beat you up. I've got no problem running a box or more of rounds through it in a session.

Going to a gun and knife shoe this weekend. Not leaving without making a purchase. Which will be my first gun. Looking for a .40 of some sort.

I’m a small guy, 5’5” at 135 so even a cell phone on my hip is bulky. I just got my CCW permit yesterday so I have some shopping to do.
The only .45 I shot was a Kimber 1911, which was huge in my hands (hue hue ) so the thought of carrying a .45 seems awkward.
I would mind holding one, just to see how it feels.

Sweet, good luck! If I may ask, why .40?

These feel very nice in the hand, and I’ve only put a handful of magazines through one but I like it. Not actually that heavy but feel that way because they’re metal/dense. The mag prices are a ripoff but check out the extended ones as the extra grip is helpful.

“Dense” is definitely accurate. Luckily, mine came with the two extended magazines.

It is worth looking at. I’ve got really small hands and it fits my hands pretty well. It is skinny enough that it doesn’t print on me and I’m not a huge guy either. About 5’10”, 175.
Definitely go out and see what works best for you. Some guns will fit your hands way better than others. Some will work better for concealment, some will be easier to shoot. If you can find a range that will let you rent or even test fire guns that would be an excellent way to go. If you've shot some in the past you can usually tell inside of 10 rounds if a pistol will work for you.

Ugh I’m so jealous.
I’m assuming you live in the U.S. but I’d really like to work at least part time in the firearms industry, but if I want to work at a range or something it’s gonna cost me time and quite a bit of money, but I still might go for it. Doesn’t help that I’m in one of the worst provinces in Canada for it too (at least I’m not in the middle of nowhere).
I really just want some range time but there aren’t too many ranges around me that don’t have membership requirements and crap, plus it’s a little more complicated once you take in licensed and unlicensed shooters.

Is it restricted or prohibited? Because I thought all pistols were at least restricted, or are some non restricted?

Handguns are restricted in Canada, so long as they are longer than 105 mm and have a magazine limited to ten rounds, from what I remember. Any that are prohibited can only be legally obtained if they are grandfathered in, from what I can tell.

Don’t want to spend my money on just a 9mm. But I don’t want to pay for the price of .45 ammo. Plus .45s just cost more obviously.

But when you say they are required to have a certain barrel length, if they are below they are prohibited right? I haven’t looked toooo much into getting my restricted license, just a regular PAL for now.

Yes, they are prohibited. Which means that you cannot legally own them, except in very rare circumstances.

I have that Spyderco. Great knife. The gun looks nice, too. I really need to get a CC pistol at some point.
